When you live on the Northshore, you have the advantage of getting to many places in a short period of time. One of those places is just 60 miles away to Gulfport, Mississippi. First, it is all about the food and drink. Stop 1 – The Sweet Look at these beauties! If you are looking for any type of oyster dish, the Half Shell is the place. The restaurant that was a must on my itinerary is the famous Half Shell Oyster House. While I had visited the Louisiana locations, there is something to be said about experiencing

Parade Around Town

There will be plenty of these to be had during Mardi Gras in St. Tammany Parish. New Orleans may be the first thing to come to mind in everything that is Mardi Gras. However, the Crescent City does not have a hold on all the fun. St. Tammany Parish knows how to celebrate the season in perfect fashion. After all, the public schools take an entire week off to enjoy the festivities. The following are three places to partake in Mardi Gras fun without crossing Lake Pontchartrain. Parade Around Covington In the bustling town of Covington, you get

Mandeville Is Mandatory for Good (Everything)

2019-12-30T17:24:54-05:00December 30th, 2019|Blog, Uncategorized|

When I first discovered St. Tammany Parish after venturing outside the New Orleans area, the first place I happened upon was Mandeville. Having loved what I experienced, it was time to visit this beautiful place again. Start the Day Off Right Louisiana is known for its delicious food, and what better way to start off the day than with a delicious Cajun-and-Creole-inspired menu! When I Googled breakfast joints, one immediately got my attention. Liz’s Where Y’at Diner lived up to its unique name. While there were so many fantastic options, including a whole section on eggs Benedict varieties, I opted

The Capital of Cool – Part Two

2019-11-27T15:52:30-05:00November 27th, 2019|Blog, Uncategorized|

On my visit to Baton Rouge for an LSU game some weeks back, I was pleasantly surprised at just how cool this place is. Being just over an hour from the Heart of the Northshore in St. Tammany Parish, I knew it was well worth my time for a second look. Something Old With the Old State Capitol Building's majestic exterior, I felt like a princess walking into her castle. My first stop was a visit to the past. The Old State Capitol Building was the site of some significant historic events, including the state's secession from the

The Capital of Cool – Part One

2019-11-12T10:53:53-05:00October 29th, 2019|Blog, Uncategorized|

With all the wonderful cities and towns of St. Tammany Parish, there has to be a good reason to leave the Northshore. Of course, I had taken many trips over the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway to indulge in the sights, sounds and flavors of New Orleans. I have never been to the state capital, Baton Rouge. Well, the place whose name translates to "red stick" (supposedly due to the red cypress tree that was a land marker), is really cool. Tigers Do Scream LSU's Tiger Stadium holds over 100,000 excited fans. My friend, a big-time LSU fan, had tickets

Three Festivals to Fall for

2019-10-10T11:55:41-04:00September 23rd, 2019|Blog, Uncategorized|

In last month’s post, I spotlighted three unique sights to experience in St. Tammany Parish. This month, the focus is on fall festivals. The Parish has plenty of festivals to enjoy throughout the season. Here are three over the October 18 – 20 weekend.   Three-Day Festival Whether you attend the Festival of the Lake or the Monster Mash, you are in for a treat. There will be games for all ages! This festival has been around for quite a bit. Festival of the Lake, presented by Our Lady of the Lake in Mandeville, runs October 18-20. The

Three Site Sights for Sightseekers

2019-08-26T15:08:19-04:00August 25th, 2019|Blog, Uncategorized|

With the hot days of summer winding down, now is the perfect time to experience some really cool things without leaving the Parish. Receiving recommendations from locals all over St. Tammany, here are my suggestions for three memorable sights that basically scream Louisiana. Site Sight #1 - Cabin Fever Right on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain, beyond the city lights of New Orleans, you can become one with nature at Fontainebleau State Park. Spread over 2,800 acres, this nature lover’s paradise features recreation of all sorts. Whether you want to hike, bike, kayak, birdwatch or just laze on the sandy

We all know New Orleans is known for many things, one of which is the options available for happy hour. However, there really is no need to leave St. Tammany Parish, as we have plenty of places to enjoy a beverage or two. Below are three recommendations, no matter what type of libation you desire. Get Crafty Come for a cool cocktail, stay for a hot meal. When you want something a little out of the ordinary, a great place to satisfy that thirst is Lola. TGIW – Thank Goodness It’s Wednesday

2019-06-21T18:36:14-04:00June 21st, 2019|Blog, Uncategorized|

Over the last several posts, I have recommended a variety of activities to enjoy in New Orleans. However, there is so much to do up on the Northshore that you may seldom venture to The Crescent City. Wednesday, or Hump Day as it is often referred, can seem like a day where nothing much happens. In St. Tammany Parish, you have lots of ways to make this weekday a great one. The Wednesday Brew Krewe is a great group for new friends and more exercise. Brew Krewe for You Abita Brewery offers a fantastic running club (I call

An Ideal Meal in Three Parts

2019-05-23T22:15:36-04:00May 23rd, 2019|Blog, Uncategorized|

Every time I am in New Orleans, I get excited thinking about where I would eat my ideal meal. With so many choices, it would have to include favorites from three places. Entree - Savory Sandwich The muffuletta at Central Grocery is simply the best. I am not an olive person or a big sandwich kind of gal. However, the ultimate breakfast, lunch or dinner entree is definitely a muffuletta. And, the best place to get one doesn’t even qualify as a restaurant. Central Grocery is a third-generation, old-fashioned store that features local favorites. So, what makes the muffuletta
